Tanara Martin

Perhaps it began with afternoons spent watching Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger. For Tanara Martin, the West took hold early—and became real when she moved to Montana 44 years ago. A contemporary painter shaped by decades beneath wide Western skies, she finds endless inspiration where horizon meets earth: the spare elegance of the landscape, nature’s daily spectacle, and the strength and grace of the creatures that roam the plains.

Largely self-taught, Tanara continues her education through close observation—studying light, color, and form in nature and learning from artists who move her. Her deep admiration for horses and bison is a constant thread, as is her curiosity about the West—both as it was and as it becomes. Working intuitively with a palette knife and purposeful, simplified brushstrokes, she seeks the soul and emotion of her subjects. She approaches each canvas with a clear intention; whether through texture, bold color, or contemplative negative space, she lets the image emerge freely.
